A little while ago a friend of mine uploaded his tunes to MySpace Music, prompting me to think about doing the same. Although I did not do the same, one of the frames on the page is “Influences”. This got me to thinking about who my influences were. I duly wrote them down and tried to order them in some sort of chronology, from the earliest to the latest, that way you know where I’m coming from:
Pet Shop Boys, Carter USM, Levellers, Jean-Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream, REM, Primal Scream, Pop Will Eat Iteself, The Auteurs, U2, The Orb, Orbital, Loop Guru, The Doors, Underworld, The Young Gods, Leftfield, React Records, Banco de Gaia, Astralasia, System 7, the Northern Exposure series, Hallucinogen, Eat Static, Future Sound of London, Fluke, The Advent, Lab 4, Tom Middleton, David Holmes, Bent, Zero 7, Boards of Canada, Slam, Silicone Soul, Der Dritte Raum, Superstition Records, Mylo, Deadmau5, Trentemoller, Ulrich Schnauss, Morgan Geist
It is worth noting here that the earliest influences are the ones that still register as being influences as it is difficult for me to understand where some of these threads originate.
Please look at the nested pages for my Top of the Pops of recent months…I wish I had started doing this when I was about 18 – that would have been an interesting history to look back on. These are mainly tracks that have been occupying my MP3 player during that month and will therefore be tracks/albums purchased during that period. Because the capacity of the player is relatively small I cannot house my entire music collection within its soft walls and so there is a revolving door policy in operation to ensure that new purchases are heard. However, there are inevitably tracks that get overlooked first time round that get enjoyed a couple of months later, tracks that remain popular from month to month and old classics that find their way onto these lists.
